Brother Printer Continues With Lines After Cleaning Corona Wires

Black, cyan, magenta, or yellow vertical lines or streaks can be caused by a dirty corona wire, a toner cartridge, or the drum unit. Follow the steps below to clean the corona wire and the drum roller.

1. Review your printed pages to identify the color causing the problem.

- Go to step 2 to clean the corona wire for the color line you see.

2. Clean the corona wire:

a. Press down on the front cover release button and open the front cover by pulling it towards you.

b. Hold the green handle of the drum unit. Pull the drum unit out until it stops.

c. Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and slightly push it toward the machine to unlock it. Then, pull it out of the drum unit. Repeat this for all toner cartridges.

d. Push the release the latches of the corona wire cover (1), and then open the cover. Open the gray plastic corona wire cover by lifting the tabs or latches, located on the right and left sides of the cover.

e. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right several times.

note icon Be sure to return the tab to the home position. If you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.

f. Close the corona wire cover.

g. Repeat steps 2d - 2f to clean each of the remaining three corona wires.

h. Reinstall the toner cartridges. Shake the toner cartridge side to side before reinstalling. Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and slide the toner cartridge into the drum unit. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the drum. Fold down the toner cartridge handle once the toner cartridge is in place. Repeat this for all toner cartridges.

i. Push the drum unit into the printer until it clicks into place.

j. Close the front cover of the machine.

3. Once your machine's display shows the date and time, print a Test Print page:

a. Press Menu.

b. Press 4 (Printer).

c. Press 2 (Print Options).

d. Press 3 ( Test Print) .

e. Press Black Start to print the Test Print page.

- If the document prints fine, the issue is resolved.

- If the problem continues, go to step 4.

4. Clean the drum unit:

a. Turn off the machine's power by using the power switch on the right side of the machine.

b. Press down on the front cover release button and open the front cover by pulling it towards you.

c. Hold the green handle of the drum unit. Pull the drum unit out until it stops.

d. To unlock the drum unit, turn the green lock lever (1) at the left of the machine counterclockwise to the release position. Holding the green handles of the drum unit, lift the front of the drum unit and remove it from the machine.

e. Remove all four toner cartridges by holding the handle of the toner cartridges and slightly pushing them to unlock. Then, pull each cartridge out of the drum unit. Be sure to place the toner cartridges on a clean, flat surface with a piece of paper underneath in case of spilled or scattered toner.

f. Turn the drum unit over by holding the green handles, making sure the drum unit gears (1) are on the left-hand side.

g. Look at the Test Print page that you just printed and identify the color toner causing the issue. The color on the Test Print that has any missing print is the color drum roller that should be cleaned. For example, if the cyan color line has any missing print, you should clean the drum unit roller for cyan.

h. Turn the drum unit gear, which is located on the left-hand side, with your thumb or finger while also looking at the surface of the drum unit for any dust, label, or glue-like substance on the drum unit roller.

i. If anything is found stuck on the drum unit roller, such as dust, label, or glue-like substance, wipe the surface of the drum unit with a dry cotton swab until the dust or glue on the surface is removed. If something is found stuck to the drum roller but it will not come off using a dry cotton swab, try using an isopropyl alcohol pad to clean it off. If nothing is found, still wipe the drum surface with a dry cotton swab.

j. After cleaning the drum unit, flip the drum back over to the correct position and reinstall the toner cartridges into the appropriate colored section of the drum unit until each cartridge clicks into place.

k. To be able to reinstall the drum unit, make sure the green lock lever (1) is in the release position as shown below.

l. Match the guide ends (2) of the drum unit to the traingle marks (1) on both sides of the machine, and then gently slide the drum unit into the machine until it stops at the green lock lever.

m. Turn the green lock lever clockwise to the lock position.

n. Push the drum unit in until it stops, and close the front cover.

o. Turn the machine back on by using the power switch on the right side of the machine.

5. Print another Test Print page to determine if the issue still persists:

a. Press Menu.

b. Press 4 (Printer).

c. Press 2 (Print Options).

d. Press 3 ( Test Print) .

e. Press Black Start to print the Test Print page.

- If the document prints fine, the issue is resolved.

- If the print quality is still unacceptable, replace the drum unit (part number: DR310CL). Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.
